How to be an eco-friendly web designer and save the world (or at least try...)?
02/14/07
Humanity is sitting on a ticking time bomb. If the vast majority of the world's scientists are right, we have just ten years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tail-spin of epic destruction involving extreme weather, floods, droughts, epidemics and killer heat waves beyond anything we have ever experienced.
Well, that's what it says on the web site of the movie "Inconvenient Truth". This issue is no longer an urban legend, it's something that many people proved to be true and many of us started to feel. Global warming is a fact and if we don't act it will lead us to a future-threatening disaster.
We all have an idea on what we can do about it: buying low CO2 cars, driving less, using low-energy lamps, contributing to recycling etc. All of them are true however as Web Designers what can we do about it? Here is couple of little ideas that may have huge impact when applied collectively:
- If you use your own car for business purposes try walking, biking, using public transportation or car pooling at least one day a week.
- At the end of a working day or when you are out of office for a meeting or vacation turn off your screen and computer.
- If you use paper prototype during design phase prefer recycled paper. If you can afford choose recycled materials for your mouse pad, business cards, keyboard and even your mouse.
- Save used paper prototypes, old web design magazines, old computers and old mobile phones for recycling and send them to recycling companies.
- Use low-energy Apple G4 instead of Apple PowerMac G5; AMD instead of Intel; PARDUS instead of SUSE. Compare energy consumption of your electronics with other products (for example Apple 17 inch monitor consumes almost 50% less energy then Samsung 19 inch monitor)
- For the love of God, use web standards to put fewer burden on user's computers and your servers.
- Use darker colors in your design to ensure low-energy consumption of users with CTR monitor.
- Use GoodTree or GoodSearch search engine which supports eco-friendly organizations.
- Prefer environmentally-friendly hosting companies that work with green energy.
- Buy your books, software, movies and even your lunch online: That will ensure use of less paper and packaging materials.
Can you think of anything else?
